It was pale yellow, the color of a banana, and old-fashioned, with a curly cord and a dial and one of those receivers that look like Mickey Mouse ears when you hold it upside down.

My parents had it in their bedroom. It wasnt the real phone, the normal one, the one they used and I used. The one in the bedroom was plugged in, but it never rang. It worked, too. I used it once, called time, just to see, and it worked. It was really the most unmysterious thing you could imagine.

It just never rang, thats all.“Waiting for the Call” is a short story of about 6 pages.Ernie Poodle is the pseudonym of an American who lived and died in Berlin. He left behind neither wife nor children, but after his death a large trove of finished and unfinished manuscripts was found. His writing often veers radically from the normal to the weird, from the serious to the comical, and defies any literary category.

This is the first of a series of his short stories to be published by Hula Ink, an e-book micropublisher founded in part to make the best of Ernie’s unpublished available to the interested readers.
